Go beyond collecting interventions. Learn how to think, connect, and respond creatively.

Start with the foundational counseling skills that make creative interventions meaningful — then go deeper with Advanced Creative Clinical Reasoning to strengthen your flexibility, clinical creativity, and ability to respond in the moment.

You have the games.

The art supplies.

The worksheets.

Maybe some miniatures, a deck of cards, a pile of fidgets, a bag of instruments, and at least one therapeutic activity you found on the internet at 11 PM on Pinterest.

But what happens when the tween sitting across from you shrugs and says:

“I don’t know.” or “I don’t want to do that today.”

What happens when your carefully planned intervention completely bombs and you don’t know what to do!?

Or when a client barely talks, rejects every activity you suggest, or communicates in ways that don’t look anything like the therapy you imagined?

Creative Counseling Skills is a professional training series for therapists who work with children and teens and want to move beyond simply collecting creative interventions.

Because effective creative therapy isn’t just about what you do.

Start with the Foundations (Coming Fall 2026!🥳)

Build the counseling skills underneath effective creative therapy.

Maybe your training taught you how to use music, art, movement, play, or another creative modality — but gave you less preparation for navigating the moment-to-moment counseling relationship, ESPECIALLY with kids and teens.

You may have found yourself thinking…

What do I actually SAY? How can I weave verbal skills into my creative specialty? How do I respond when a client shuts down? How do I validate without sounding scripted? When should I follow, and when should I direct?

How do I use a creative intervention without making it feel like an activity I’m doing to the client?

And how do I know whether what I’m doing is actually therapeutic?

Creative Counseling Skills: Foundations for Child & Teen Therapy is designed to strengthen the counseling, relational, and clinical reasoning skills that make creative interventions meaningful.

This course goes underneath the intervention.

Rather than giving you another giant list of activities and sending you on your way- instead we’ll explore the foundational skills that help you use the interventions you already know more intentionally. Plus we’re obviously giving you more interventions. Like 50+ of them 🤣

You’ll explore concepts including:

  • relational neurosciences & attachment
  • therapeutic presence and the therapeutic relationship
  • curiosity over certainty
  • tentative language
  • validation and dialectical language
  • process comments
  • permission and collaboration
  • strengths-based communication
  • directive and non-directive approaches
  • creative communication beyond direct verbal processing
  • choosing and adapting interventions intentionally
  • understanding creativity as a clinical process
  • working responsively with hard-to-engage children and teens

And throughout the course, we’ll explore what happens when we stop asking:

“What activity should I do?”

and start asking:

“What am I noticing, what might this client need, and how could I respond?”

Therapy Isn’t Just About Interventions.

It’s about tapping into the creative clinical flow.

The most effective therapists are the ones who…

🧠 can think on their toes clinically
💜 know how to communicate intentionally
🎨 support creative problem solving in-the-moment
📚 blend clinical theory, communication skills, and relationship sciences

You’ll learn a flexible framework for thinking through what happens before, during, and after an intervention:

NOTICE — Creative Orientation
What am I noticing about this client, myself, our relationship, and what’s happening right now?

HYPOTHESIZE — Creative Reasoning
What might this client need? What are the different ways I could understand what I’m seeing?

RESPOND — Creative Expression
How could I respond through conversation, play, art, music, movement, games, metaphor, psychoeducation, silence, or something else entirely?

OBSERVE
What happened when I responded? What new information did the client give me?

ADJUST
What does that new information change about what I understand — and what I might try next?

Then we do it again.

Because real therapy rarely follows the intervention exactly as we planned it, am I right!?

And that’s not a failure of the process. That’s the process.

This course is for you if…

You work with children or adolescents and want to feel more confident in the counseling relationship.

You’re a music therapist, art therapist, dance/movement therapist, drama therapist, expressive arts therapist, play therapist, counselor, social worker, or other mental health professional who uses creative approaches in your work.

You know a LOT of interventions but sometimes aren’t sure what to do when the intervention isn’t working.

You work with tweens or teens who respond to questions with some variation of “I don’t know,” “fine,” or a shrug.

You want to integrate creative interventions without losing sight of treatment goals, clinical reasoning, or the therapeutic relationship.

Or you simply want to feel less dependent on having the perfect activity prepared before your client walks through the door.

Already have strong counseling foundations?

Advanced Creative Clinical Reasoning (Coming Spring 2027💕)

Stop searching for the perfect intervention. Learn how to create possibilities with what is in front of you!

You understand rapport.

You know your counseling micro-skills.

You’ve worked with children and teens long enough to know that even the best session plan can fall apart approximately 45 seconds after the client enters the room.

So what happens next?

Advanced Creative Clinical Reasoning is designed for experienced clinicians who want to strengthen the flexible, generative thinking underneath creative therapy.

It’s about developing the skills to create #51 by using exactly what is in front of you in the moment. It’s about growing your own flexibility, creativity, awareness, and outside-the-box thinking in your sessions to better serve your clients.

Walk away knowing how to make almost anything in the therapy room therapeutic (and have the flowcharts, worksheets, and organizational materials to make that happen)!

Creativity isn’t the art or music supplies.

A therapist can use paint, music, games, or play in an incredibly rigid way.

And a therapist sitting in an empty room with no materials can practice with extraordinary creativity.

That’s because creative expression and creative thinking aren’t the same thing.

Clinical creativity is the ability to generate possibilities while remaining grounded in the needs of the client, the therapeutic relationship, and your clinical reasoning.

Or put another way:

Creativity asks:

What could I do?

Clinical reasoning asks:

What fits this client, in this moment — and why?

Advanced Creative Clinical Reasoning lives in the space between those two questions.

Which creative counseling skills course should I take?

Start with Foundations if…

You want stronger counseling and relational skills for working creatively with children and teens.

You want to strengthen the bridge between having creative interventions and using them therapeutically.

You want practical language, frameworks, examples, and foundational skills you can use immediately.

Or you’re thinking:

“YES. Please teach me what to actually say and do with these kids.”

Start with Advanced if…

You’re already comfortable with foundational counseling skills and the therapeutic relationship.

You want to become more flexible when a client doesn’t respond the way you expected.

You’re less interested in learning another intervention and more interested in strengthening how you think clinically and creatively.

Or you’re thinking:

“I know how to do therapy. I want to get much better at creating and adapting possibilities in the moment.”

Want both?

Perfect.

The two courses are designed to complement one another.

Foundations builds the ground underneath your creative clinical work.

Advanced teaches you how to move around on it.

Take either course independently, or complete both as a deeper Creative Counseling Skills learning pathway. Discounted enrollment will be available for clinicians who choose both courses.

Hi, I’m Kate 👋

I’m a therapist, educator, and creator of Creative Therapy Umbrella, where I provide training, consultation, and creative counseling resources for therapists working with children and teens.

My teaching style is very down-to-earth, practical, relational, and creativity-focused. I love helping therapists feel more confident, flexible, playful, and grounded in the room without feeling like they have to become a Pinterest camp counselor or perfectly polished play therapist.

Through years of clinical work, consultation, and continuing education teaching, I have developed a practical and relationship-centered approach to helping therapists feel more confident, flexible, and grounded in their work while building their own authenticity!
